Picture of Light, by Peter Mettler

Honored at multiple international film festivals, PICTURE OF LIGHT takes a film crew to the Sub Artic to capture the wonder of the Northern Lights. While combining glimpses of the characters who live in this remote environment and the crew's both comic and absurd attempts to deal with extremes, PICTURE OF LIGHT reflects upon the paradoxes involved in trying to capture the natural wonder of the Northern Lights on celluloid. Winner of Best Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Writing at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, La Sarraz Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival, Grand Prize (Images & Documents) at Figueira da Foz International Festival, and the Award for Excellence at the Yamagata International Documentary Festival in Japan.

Preludes: Selected Works of Peter Mettler

Preludes: Selected Works of Peter Mettler: Three films from groundbreaking filmmaker and frequent Atom Egoyan colaaborator Peter Mettler:
SCISSERE (1983): A first-person foray into the disorienting realm between reason and sensation, SCISSERE is an incorrigibly inventive first feature film. It deploys a seemingly inexhaustible repertoire of optical effects, in rendering the experiences of a mental patient wandering outside institutional confines for the first time in many years. SCISSERE is a film which deliberately eludes verbal categorization or description.
EASTERN AVENUE (1985): From the material he shot during a three month journey, Peter Mettler edited a lyrical film which is no ordinary travelogue or diary. Without occupying himself in advance with anticipated images, he attempted as often as spontaneously as possible to respond and react to his surroundings, improvising with the camera as one would on a musical instrument.
BALIFILM (1997): Mettler brings us into the world of the mystical and the unconscious through his exploration of this extraordinary culture. BALIFILM was originally commissioned as a stage performance, created from diary images and sounds collected in 1990 and 1992 by Peter Mettler on the island of Bali.

The Top of His Head, by Peter Mettler

The Top of His Head by Peter Mettler: A genuinely mind-altering experience from the gifted lens of director-cinematographer Peter Mettler, frequent cinematographer for Atom Egoyan (THE SWEET HEREAFTER). THE TOP OF HIS HEAD is an avant-garde fairy tale which blends dramatic narrative with imagistic cinema and offers nothing less than new ways of seeing.

Aspect Chronicle of New Media Vol. IX: Performance

Aspect Chronicle of New Media Volume IX - Performance: Performance has been an integral part of the mission of ASPECT since our inception, and we are proud to present this broad interpretation of the practice for our ninth volume. In this issue, ASPECT focuses on the broad spectrum of performance art-from traditional interpretations of performance to those integrating advanced technologies, inanimate objects, passersby, and site. Some performances should not be recorded or replayed, leaving anyone not present to rely on second hand accounts and their imagination. However, the videos included in this issue of ASPECT are works intended to be seen repeatedly and broadly.
