Picasso: The Man and His Work, Part I

This Cannes Film Festival selection takes a comprehensive and fascinating look at the life and art of the legendary Pablo Picasso. During the last 22 years of Picasso's life, film maker Edward Quinn had complete access to the artist. Through a combination of exclusive home movies and intimate photos, as well as over 600 of the artist's works (many never seen in public), a living, breathing scrapbook of Picasso is realized. The film follows the parallel development of the artist's life and work, giving insight into his creative processes. Among other highlights are some of the last pictures ever taken of him.

Part 1(1881-1937) Starting in 1896, when he was only 15, we trace Picasso's artistic development, exploring his work as a youth, from the Blue period to the Pink period and his first steps into Cubism in 1906. Then we discover the Chrysteline period where he went from analytical to synthetic Cubism until entering his Neoclassical period in 1918. Part 1 culminates with the painting of his masterpiece "Guernica" in 1937.

Picasso: The Man and His Work, Part II

Part 2(1938-1973) Through the war years and life on the French Riviera, Picasso's work moves on to include ceramics, sculpture, pottery and graphics. The period from 1946 to 1973 is made up primarily of home movies, showing his relationships with his children and the women in his life, and emphasizing the enormous amount of work accomplished by Picasso during his last 20 years. We observe Picasso, 90 years old, working on a copper plate engraving as we follow the progress and changes made through 6 different stages. (45 min plus over 60 minutes of bonus features)

Lagos Wide & Close featuring Rem Koolhaas

Because filming has long been restricted in Nigeria, few images of Lagos exist. Based on research by The Harvard Project on the City under the direction of Rem Koolhaas, this DVD represents a unique engagement with a hardly documented city, capturing multiple perspectives of a volatile moment in its evolution.

In 2002, Bregtje van der Haak, in cooperation with architect Rem Koolhaas and The Harvard Project on the City made Lagos/Koolhaas, a documentary on self-organization and urbanization in Nigeria. As a sequel to the documentary, Bregtje van der Haak together with designer Silke Wawro, developed the DVD: Lagos Wide and Close, an Interactive Journey into an Exploding City. The DVD contains an interactive video documentary (60'), edited from 55 hours of unused material that brings the viewer closer to the explosively growing megalopolis Lagos. With bus driver Olawole Busayo, the viewer moves through the city and has a choice of a distant ('wide') or an involved ('close') perspective, at any random moment in the documentary.

Yves St. Laurent: His Life and Times

YVES SAINT LAURENT: HIS LIFE AND TIMES follows his career, from his precocious privileged youth in colonial Algeria to his emergences as Christian Dior's teenage protégé, and then heir at age 22, to the dazzling debut of his first line under his own name. It conveys the key role he played during his nearly half century career leading the transition of high fashion as something for a wealthy elite to fashion as a broad based pop cultural phenomenon. Rarely interviewed, Saint Laurent himself speaks candidly and with great emotion about key events of his life. Abetted with an array of telling photos and evocative period footage featuring longtime supporters like Catherine Deneuve and lee Radizwell as well as contemporary interviews with this longtime business partner and companion Pierre Berge, a portrait emerges of arguably one of the century's key cultural figures.
